— Sheila Abrams, NJ Arts Maven

Avery Scott is a violinist earning a Master of Music degree at the Mannes School of Music in the studio of Stefan Jackiw. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from the Boston University School of Music under the tutelage of Yuri Mazurkevich and Klaudia. He has also studied privately and in masterclasses with Timothy Chooi, Mark Kaplan, Tessa Lark, Giora Schmidt, Peter Zazofsky, and Dale Stuckenbruck.

A passionate chamber musician, Avery has performed a variety of chamber music repertoire, both eclectic and foundational, at summer festivals such as the Orford Music Academy, Lake George Music Festival, the Berkshire High Peaks Festival, and the Pierrot Chamber Music Festival. His chamber music instructors have included Pavel Nersessian, Yehuda Hanani, Alexander Shtarkman, Michael Strauss, Veronica Salas, and Maureen Hynes, as well as members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, collectif9, and the Arneis, Muir, JACK, Shanghai, and Emerson Quartets.

Additionally, Avery is an experienced orchestral performer who has played under the batons of conductors such as James Burton, Jonathan McPhee, Mischa Santora, Stefan Asbury, Roger Kalia, David Hayes, and Christopher Allen. Avery served as Associate Concertmaster of the Long Island Youth Orchestra and the Pierrot Festival Chamber Orchestra, and he was a pre-college guest with the LIU Post Orchestra and the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey.

In his career, Avery has been the recipient of several awards, including the 2023 Boston University Presser Scholarship, membership in the Alpha Kappa chapter of the Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Society, the Cynthia Platt Scholarship (Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey), the Tilles Scholar Prize (Pierrot Chamber Music Festival), and the Rex Chao Memorial Prize for dedication to the study and performance of chamber music (Pierrot Chamber Music Festival). He was also a winner of the 2019 Long Island Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition.

In addition to his work as a performer, Avery is an avid composer whose music has been featured in performances at the Fresh Squeezed Opera Company, the Pierrot Chamber Music Festival, and the Long Island Composer's Alliance. In 2023, his one-act opera Sonata Form, for which Avery wrote both music and libretto, was commissioned by a grant from the Boston University Office of the Provost.

Avery is a committed believer in the importance of rich and engaging musical education, and this belief has led him to teach both private and group violin lessons in numerous capacities, including as a Teaching Assistant for the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra. Outside the classroom, Avery's educational efforts extend to his work with Classical Arizona PBS, where he writes and hosts Take Note and Arizona Encore, weekly radio programs where he showcases a variety of classical music and its surprising, fascinating history.
